The stock exchange is a share market, which provides trading facilities for stock brokers and traders. The trade shares of the listed companies and other financial instruments.

Stock Exchange Meaning

A market is a place for buying and selling. The stock market connects buyers and stock sellers. A stock market is an equity market is the aggregation of buyers and sellers of stocks, which represent ownership claims on businesses.

What is Stock Exchange

The stock market is an important part of the country economy. The stock market connects buyers and stock sellers. Stocks can be traded on one or more several possible county exchanges. A Stock exchange is a market where stock brokers and traders can buy and sell shares of stock, bonds, and other securities. The stock market is to issue shares for the investors to invest in stocks.

The company needs to get listed on a stocks exchange and through the primary market of the stock exchange. The company can issue the shares and get the funds for business requirement.

Largest Stock Exchanges in the World

1. New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

New York Stock Exchange

NYSE stands for new york stock exchange. It is located in wall street in new york. It was founded in 1817. It did not operate under the NYSE name until 1963. It is the largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization even wall street crash in 1929 and black Tuesday in 1987.

2. National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System (NASDAQ)


NASDAQ is an abbreviation of the national association of securities dealers automated quotations. It is the 2nd largest stock exchange market in the world. It is an American stock exchange. The headquarters in NewYork city located at the famous Times Square.

NASDAQ commenced business on Feb 8, 1971, and it is the world’s first electronically traded stock market. It has always used a computer and telephone system for trading, which made the first electronic stock exchange.

NASDAQ has combined market capitalization of $10.8 trillion. It consists of more than 3000 stocks listed. NASDAQ’s top listed companies are Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, and Tesla.

3. Tokyo Stock Exchange

The Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) is the largest exchange in Japan and the third-largest stock exchange market in the world. Tokyo stock exchange was founded in 1878. The market capitalization is more than $3 trillion. The reason behind the increasing size of the Tokyo stock exchange is a strong national currency.

There are 3575 companies listed on the Tokyo stock exchange. The market capitalization is $6.22 trillion as of March 2018. The top listed companies are Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corp, and Sony Corp.

The TSE did face problems after world war 2. It was suspended between august 1945 and April 1949 due to the country involved in the war. The Tokyo stock exchange benchmark index is the nikkei 225.

It was rebranded in 1949 and is now commonly known under the name of its owner i.e Japan exchange group. It is formed in the merger of two exchanges i.e Osaka Securities stock exchange and Tokyo stock exchange int 2013.

4. Shanghai Stock Exchange

The shanghai stock exchange is 4th largest stock exchange in the world. It is located in the city of shanghai. It has a combined market capitalization of US$ 5.01 trillion.

Shanghai stock exchange is opened in late 1990. The exchange origins do actually date back to 1866, but it was suspended in 1949 due to the Chinese revolution. It has 1500 companies trade on its exchange.

The major stocks are PetroChina, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and the Agricultural Bank of China.

5. Hong Kong Stock Exchange

The hong kong stock exchange is 5th largest in the world. It is 3rd stock exchange in Asia. The market capitalization is $4.46 trillion in march 2018.

This stock exchange was founded in 1891 by the association of stockbrokers in hong kong. It was renamed to the hong kong stock exchange in 1914. The listed companies are approximately 2000, half of the companies are from mainland China.

The large portion market capitalization comes from its 20 largest stocks. Some of them are AIA, Tencent Holdings, PetroChina, China Mobile, and HSBC Holdings.
